Situk River Fishing
The 13.5 mile Situk River weather to fish or just enjoy the scenery should be a river float on everyone’s bucket list.
Many area lodges provide guide services on the Situk River. The river is also available to fish on foot. With a good pair of waders one can set out hiking on one of the trails along the river. Trails head upstream from 9 mile bridge 4.5 miles to Situk Lake. There is a trail that leads downstream 3 miles to Middle Situk Cabins. There are many good fishing holes if one wants to travel the trails or wade the river upstream from the lower landing.
The Situk has a species for every fisherman……………
First in line in early spring is the world renowned Situk River Steelhead. The Situk River has the largest steelhead fishery in AK, with the average size 30” and a good population of trophy size of 36”. A steelheaders dream.
Second in line sockeye salmon. During June and July you can find sockeye holding in deep holes waiting to push upstream at high tide to spawn.
Next is another large Situk River fishery, the Coho Salmon. While Coho’s can be fished throughout the river, they are mostly targeted from the mouth of the old Situk down to the tidewater.
During any run Dolly Varden can be found throughout the river feeding on fry and eggs. Dollies up to 4 pounds are fun switch up for any fisherman.
